Biography

Born and raised in Parma, Italy, in 1976, I developed a deep passion for the big screen from an early age. There was something magical about the movies I watched at the cinema. Through their unique combination of light and sound, they seemed to leave a lasting impression in my eyes and mind, carrying with them a part of the emotions of those who had created those stories. I would return home eager to go back as soon as possible, so I could once again be swept away by those wonderful feelings. At first, I mostly watched animated and children's films, then later I discovered the masterpieces that made the History of the Cinema, which fueled my desire to create a film of my own.

My educational journey was not an easy one. While attending a business and accounting high school, I struggled to find genuine interest in the subjects I was required to study. I felt that this education would be useful in some ways, yet at the same time it seemed to be taking me further away from what I truly wanted to do in my life.

I tried to develop my skills by writing short film scripts, but at that time Parma, even though it had been the home of great directors such as Bernardo Bertolucci, offered very few opportunities for aspiring filmmakers. Fortunately, things began to change in the late 1990s, when several production companies from Rome came to the city to shoot feature films and television series. I started working as a camera assistant, production assistant, and assistant director. This allowed me to experience film firsthand: the wonderful world of celluloid. In the beginning, I was taught how to load and unload film magazines for motion picture cameras. It was an incredible experience. During those years, I learned a lot about 35mm and 16mm film cameras and their lenses. I was also fortunate enough to meet many talented professionals who taught me invaluable lessons.

Later, I tried moving to Rome, where almost all film production in Italy was based. I lived there for short periods and, with considerable effort, managed to find productions to work with. As a result, I often spent more time back in Parma, trying to remain active in the industry as a camera operator and editor, thanks in part to the emergence of new digital technologies. Whenever possible, I would then try again to return to the capital.Together with friends and fellow enthusiasts, I formed a strong creative team, and we collaborated on many projects. Eventually, in 2005, I moved to Rome more permanently. During that period, I worked on several productions and laid the groundwork for what would become my first feature film, released in 2007: Solitaire (Il Solitario). A dream had come true.

Filmography

I made my debut as director and producer with "Solitaire", after having overseen editing and production of "Nel Cuore della Notte" (2002). Previously I worked as assistant on several films and television shows such as "Voglio Una Donna!" (1997), "Cronaca Nera" (1998), "I.a.s." (2000), "Giovani" (2003) and "Cielo e Terra" (2005). I edited the documentary "Parmigianino e il Manierismo Europeo" (2003) for RaiSat, the children’s program "Acquanauti" (2006) for RaiSat Ragazzi, the theatrical show "Marat Sade" (2006) for Rai Cinema and the film "Project K" (2007) for Eagle Pictures and many others projects for Medusa Film, Sky Italia, Technicolor, SDI Media, Stresa Festival, etc.

As a executive producer I worked on three documentaries by Francesco Barilli "Red Chairs - Parma and the Cinema" (2014), "Il Regio nel paese del melodramma" (2015), "The hidden colors of Benedetto Antelami" (2017) and in the feature film "The winner" directed by Luca Magri (2016).

As director I worked on the animated short "The Scarecrow" (2006) winner of several festivals and competitions, the documentary "Hatteras - Hull of Fame" (2008), my second feature film "The house in the wind of dead", the episode “Thou art the man!” from the movie “P.O.E 3 – Pieces of Eldritch” (2014) and the documentary "Giuseppe Verdi and the Glory - The Monument of the Centennial" (2015).

Biografia

Nato e cresciuto a Parma, classe 1976, fin da piccolo ho avuto un’enorme passione per il grande schermo. Sentivo qualcosa di magico nei film che andavo a vedere al cinema e che, grazie a quell’impostazione di luci e suoni, ti rimanesse dentro gli occhi e impressa nella mente una parte delle emozioni di chi aveva creato quelle storie. Rientravo a casa con il desiderio di tornarci al più presto per potermi far trascinare da quelle bellissime sensazioni. All’inizio erano più che altro film d’animazione o per bambini, poi un susseguirsi di capolavori della cinematografia mondiale, per cui cresceva il desiderio di provare a farne uno tutto mio.

Il mio percorso formativo non è stato semplice, non trovavo un reale interesse per le materie che dovevo studiare frequentando la scuola di ragioneria, sentivo che mi sarebbe stata utile in un modo, ma che forse mi stava allontanando da quello che avrei voluto fare nella vita.

Cercavo di esercitarmi scrivendo cortometraggi ma in quel periodo, nonostante fosse stata la città di grandi registi come Bernardo Bertolucci, Parma non offriva molti sbocchi per quel mestiere. Per fortuna alla fine degli anni Novanta qualcosa è cambiato e alcune produzioni romane sono venute in città per girare film e serie tv.

Ho cominciato a fare l’assistente operatore, l’assistente di produzione e l’assistente alla regia e ho potuto toccare con mano la pellicola, la meravigliosa celluloide, perché all’inizio mi avevano insegnato anche a caricare e scaricare la pellicola nei caricatori per la macchina da presa. Un’esperienza meravigliosa. Ho così avuto il tempo di imparare molto sulle 35mm e sulle 16mm e le loro ottiche. Ho avuto la fortuna di conoscere tante persone che mi hanno insegnato molto. Poi ho provato a trasferirmi a Roma, dove era prodotto quasi tutto il cinema in Italia. Ho vissuto a Roma per brevi periodi e con molta fatica trovavo delle produzioni per cui lavorare. Quindi passavo praticamente più tempo a Parma a cercare di rimanere nel settore facendo l’operatore e il montatore grazie anche alla nuova tecnologia digitale, per poi ritentare di tornare nella Capitale appena mi era possibile.

Con gli amici e appassionati come me avevamo creato un bel gruppo di lavoro e abbiamo collaborato molto a vari progetti, fino a che non mi sono trasferito più definitivamente a Roma nel 2005. In quel periodo ho lavorato per varie produzioni e ho potuto gettare le basi per prepararmi al mio primo lungometraggio, nel 2007: “Il Solitario”. Un sogno si era realizzato.

Ho esordito come regista e produttore con "Il solitario" (2008), dopo aver curato il montaggio e la produzione di "Nel cuore della notte" (2002). In precedenza ho lavorato, in qualità di assistente, a film e fiction televisive come "Voglio una donna!" (1997), "Cronaca nera" (1998), "I.A.S." (2000), "Giovani" (2003) e "Cielo e terra" (2005). Come montatore ho curato il documentario "Parmigianino e il manierismo europeo" (2003) per RaiSat, il programma "Acquanauti" (2006) per RaiSat Ragazzi, la rappresentazione teatrale "Marat Sade" (2006) per Rai Cinema, il film "Project K" (2008) per la Eagle Pictures e altri progetti per Medusa Film, Sky Italia, Technicolor, SDI Media, Stresa Festival, ecc. Per Il solitario ho anche firmato il soggetto insieme a Federico Soncini. 

Come produttore esecutivo ho curato tre documentari di Francesco Barilli "Poltrone Rosse - Parma e il Cinema" (2014) / "Il Regio nel paese del melodramma" (2015) / "I colori nascosti di Benedetto detto Antelami" (2017) e il film "Il Vincente" diretto da Luca Magri (2016).

Come regista ho firmato il cortometraggio d'animazione "Lo spaventapasseri" (2006), il documentario "Hatteras" (2008), il secondo lungometraggio "La casa nel vento dei morti" (2012), l’episodio “Sei tu il colpevole!” del film “P.O.E 3 – Pieces of Eldritch” (2014) e il documentario "Giuseppe Verdi e la Gloria - Il Monumento del Centenario" (2015).
